We are working to prevent new HIV/AIDS infections in Uganda using innovative approaches that take into account the unique socio-economic and cultural factors of our country. Among these are.

• Mobile Health interventions: This can include sending SMS messages with HIV/AIDS prevention messages, providing access to virtual counseling and telemedicine services, and using mobile apps for behavior change interventions.
• Community-led HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs: Engaging local communities and empowering them to take ownership of HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. This involves training community health workers, peer educators, and volunteers to conduct community-based HIV/AIDS education, testing, and counseling. These also involve targeted outreach to vulnerable populations, such as sex workers, injecting drug users, and LGBTQ+ individuals, who may face stigma and discrimination.
• Innovative Use of social media: Social media platforms are widely used in Uganda. We harness these to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, share accurate information, and promote safe sexual practices. In the future we hope to use social media for online counseling, support groups, and community engagement.
• Integration of HIV/AIDS Prevention with Other Health Services: Integrating HIV/AIDS prevention efforts with other health services, such as reproductive health services, maternal and child health services, and tuberculosis (TB) programs, to increase the reach and impact of prevention efforts. This has involved training healthcare providers to offer comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention services as part of routine care and leveraging existing healthcare infrastructure to deliver HIV/AIDS prevention interventions.
• Gender-Sensitive Approaches: Addressing gender norms, gender-based violence, promoting gender equality, empowering women and girls, and engaging men and boys in efforts to challenge harmful gender norms that contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS.
• Economic Empowerment Programs: such as skills training, income generation, and microfinance initiatives, to reduce vulnerability to HIV/AIDS by providing economic opportunities and reducing poverty. When individuals have economic independence, they may be less likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as transactional sex, which can increase their risk of HIV/AIDS.
• Peer-led Approaches: Peer-led approaches involve using peers as agents of change to deliver HIV/AIDS prevention messages and interventions. Peers can be individuals from the same age group, community, or social network who are trained and supported to promote HIV/AIDS prevention messages among their peers. This can include peer-led support groups, peer counseling, and peer-led advocacy efforts.
• Culturally Sensitive Approaches: Recognizing and respecting local cultural beliefs, practices, and norms for effective HIV/AIDS prevention efforts.
